Basic Requirements

I. Definition of Achievements

The research achievements of a doctoral degree applicant refer to academic papers published, scientific research awards obtained, invention patents authorized, and other achievements recognized by the University Degree Evaluation Committee after the student’s enrollment. The achievements used for the doctoral degree application must be closely related to the content of the doctoral dissertation.

II. Journal Recognition Standards

1.Academic papers of doctoral degree applicants should be published in source journals indexed by SCI-E, SSCI, A&HCI, EI, Medline, CSSCI (Core Edition), CSCD (Core Edition), or theChinese Core Journals Directory(compiled by Peking University Library, based on the edition of the year the paper was published). Supplements, special issues, and other non-standard publications of these academic journals are not included.

2.Only one paper published in academic journals hosted by Southeast University will be counted.

3.The term “source journals” in this standard refers to journals indexed by the aforementioned Chinese and international retrieval systems (retrievable in relevant Chinese and foreign databases). The recognition of source journals is based on the year of publication. The JCR quartile and impact factor of the journal are, in principle, also based on the year of publication. If the quartile and impact factor data for the current year have not been released by the retrieval system as of the degree application date, the most recently available data shall be used.

VII. Requirements for Doctoral Degree Applicants in Medical Disciplines

Doctoral students in medical disciplines must meet one of the following conditions when applying for a doctoral degree:

1.Publish one paper in an SCIE/SSCI source journal ranked in the Q1 quartile of the corresponding discipline field in the JCR Quartile Table, or in an SCIE/SSCI source journal with an Impact Factor ≥ 5.0.

2.Publish two papers in SCIE/SSCI source journals, at least one of which must be in a journal ranked in the Q2 quartile of the corresponding discipline field in the JCR Quartile Table.

3.Publish three academic papers in SCIE/SSCI source journals, Chinese Medical Association series journals, Medline-indexed journals, or EI/CSCD (Core Edition) source journals. Among these, at least two must be indexed by SCIE/SSCI, and the cumulative Impact Factor of these SCIE/SSCI-indexed journals must be ≥ 3.0.

4.Publish one academic paper in a journal with an Impact Factor ≥ 10.0. This publication may be used by up to two doctoral students listed as co-first authors to apply for their doctoral degrees, provided that the content of their respective doctoral dissertations is not substantially identical.

Degree Award Requirements for Professional Doctoral Students in Clinical Medicine at Southeast University

(This requirement applies to professional doctoral students in clinical medicine enrolled from 2021 onwards. Professional doctoral students in clinical medicine enrolled from 2018 to 2020 shall refer to this requirement for implementation.)

I. Degree Application Conditions

1.Fulfill all requirements stipulated in the training program for the professional doctoral degree in clinical medicine.

2.Complete no less than 18 months of clinical practice training (including no less than 12 months of rotation in undergraduate/specialty departments and no less than 6 months serving as Chief Resident), and pass the comprehensive clinical competence assessment organized by the School.

3.Obtain scientific research achievements that meet the standards for the professional doctoral degree in clinical medicine.

4.Independently complete the doctoral dissertation and pass the dissertation defense.

II. Clinical Competence Assessment

For specific assessment methods, please refer to theMeasures for the Comprehensive Clinical Competence Assessment of Professional Doctoral Students in Clinical Medicine at the School of Medicine, Southeast University.

III. Scientific Research Achievement Requirements

When applying for a doctoral degree, professional doctoral students in clinical medicine must obtain scientific research achievements closely related to their dissertations. Degree applicants must submit scientific research achievements that meet one of the following conditions (unless otherwise specified, the degree applicant must be the first author of the scientific research achievement; for authorship requirements, please refer to theAssessment Standards for Research Achievements for Doctoral Degree Applications at Southeast University (2018 Edition)):

1.Publish one academic paper in an SCIE/SSCI source journal (excluding abstracts, reviews, and clinical case reports).

2.Publish two academic papers in journals indexed by Medline or source journals indexed by EI/CSCD (Core Edition) (excluding abstracts, reviews, and clinical case reports).

3.Publish one academic paper in a journal indexed by Medline or a source journal indexed by EI/CSCD (Core Edition) (excluding abstracts, reviews, and clinical case reports), while simultaneously meeting one of the following conditions (A-C):

A. One provincial/ministerial-level or higher scientific research award (Third Prize or above: First Prize [ranked within top 5], Second Prize [ranked within top 3], Third Prize [ranked within top 2], with an individual award certificate).

B. One Provincial Medical Science and Technology Award or Provincial Medical New Technology Introduction Award (the degree applicant is ranked within the top 2 and possesses an individual award certificate).

C. One national invention patent (must have an authorized patent number; the degree applicant is the first inventor, or the supervisor is the first inventor and the degree applicant is the second inventor).

4.Other Special Circumstances:To encourage doctoral students to engage in original and frontier research and achieve breakthrough or disruptive scientific research results, if the doctoral dissertation is of a very high standard, upon recommendation by the supervisor and the Discipline Degree Evaluation Sub-Committee, and after a collective review of the core innovative achievements of the dissertation by high-level experts in relevant fields organized by the Graduate School, the degree application may be exempted from the above achievement requirements upon approval by voting.

Requirements for Master’s Thesis Defense and Degree Award at the School of Medicine, Southeast University

To all master’s degree-granting discipline points and graduate supervisors:

For the development of discipline construction and graduate education at our School, to further standardize degree and graduate education management, and to continuously improve the quality of graduate education, strictly based on theSoutheast University Graduate Handbookand the specific circumstances of the School of Medicine, and referencing Document No. 46 [2009] of the Graduate School of Southeast University, the following regulations are hereby established regarding the assessment requirements for published papers and other achievements for master’s thesis defense and degree award:

I. General Requirements and Specific Standards

All graduate students must pass the corresponding clinical or teaching practice competence assessment; complete the research project assigned by the supervisor and guidance group; write a dissertation that passes expert review upon the supervisor’s signature approval; meet the English proficiency level required for a master’s degree at Southeast University; and meet one of the following paper publication or achievement assessment requirements to apply for thesis defense:

For Academic Master’s Students:

1.As the first author, publish more than one paper related to the dissertation in academic journals at or above the provincial level (including provincial and above academic conferences, inter-university academic conferences, intra-university academic report meetings, andSciencepaper Onlinewith a rating of three stars or above).

2.As the first author, submit more than one paper related to the dissertation to academic journals at or above the Chinese S&T Core Journals level and obtain an acceptance notice.

3.As the second author (with the supervisor as the first author), submit more than one paper related to the dissertation to academic journals indexed by the Chinese Science Citation Database (CSCD) or above (including journals indexed by Medline, PubMed, EI, SCI, and the Chinese Medical Journal series) and obtain an acceptance notice or online publication.

4.Summarize dissertation-related content into a manuscript and submit it to an SCI journal (as the first author), obtaining a manuscript number.

5.Be ranked within the top 5 of a provincial/ministerial-level or above S&T achievement award, or within the top 3 of a national invention patent.

6.If a doctoral supervisor or a master’s supervisor undertaking a major project above the National Natural Science Foundation level determines that the graduate student does not need to publish a paper to meet the requirement for high-level publications, the student and supervisor may jointly apply to the School Academic Committee for an exemption from the paper publication requirement 2 months prior to the thesis defense. The School Academic Committee will review the dissertation to determine if it meets the master’s degree award standards.

For Professional Master’s Students in Clinical Medicine and Seven-Year Clinical Medicine Students:

1.As the first author, submit more than one article related to the dissertation (original research, review, case report, etc.) to academic journals at or above the provincial level (including provincial and above academic conferences, inter-university academic conferences, intra-university academic report meetings, andSciencepaper Onlinewith a rating of three stars or above) and obtain an acceptance notice.

2.As the second or third author (with the supervisor as the first author), submit more than one paper related to the dissertation to academic journals indexed by the CSCD or above (including journals indexed by Medline, PubMed, SCI, and the Chinese Medical Journal series) and obtain an acceptance notice or online publication.

3.Summarize dissertation-related content into a manuscript and submit it to a journal indexed by the CSCD or above (including journals indexed by Medline, PubMed, SCI, and the Chinese Medical Journal series) as the first author, obtaining a manuscript number.

4.Be ranked within the top 5 of a provincial/ministerial-level or above S&T achievement award, or within the top 3 of a national invention patent.

5.If a doctoral supervisor or a master’s supervisor undertaking a major project above the National Natural Science Foundation level determines that the graduate student does not need to publish a paper to meet the requirement for high-level publications, the student and supervisor may jointly apply to the School Academic Committee for an exemption from the paper publication requirement 2 months prior to the thesis defense. II. Authorship Regulations

Papers published by master’s students must comply with relevant authorship regulations: The School of Medicine, Southeast University, must be the first corresponding author affiliation. The order of authorship must be approved by the supervisor. For papers related to the dissertation published after the master’s student graduates and leaves the university, the affiliation must still be the School of Medicine, Southeast University, but a footnote may indicate the author’s current workplace. Personnel unrelated to the project shall not be listed as authors.

III. Implementation

Departments and graduate supervisors may propose higher requirements based on these regulations, but these must be submitted to the Medical Degree Evaluation Sub-Committee for approval and filing. Relevant requirements must be communicated to students in writing. These regulations apply to master’s students enrolled from the class of 2009 and seven-year clinical medicine students enrolled from the class of 2005. Other grades shall refer to these regulations for implementation. The right of interpretation belongs to the School of Medicine, Southeast University.

Requirements for Authorship and Recognition of Scientific Research Achievements for Graduate Students Applying for Degrees at Southeast University

Scientific research achievements used by graduate students for degree applications must be closely related to the dissertation and made under the guidance of the supervisor (or co-supervisor) during the degree study period. These can include academic papers, patents, S&T awards, social science awards, standards, appraisals, monographs, edited books, translated works, teaching cases, and other scientific research achievements recognized by the Discipline Degree Evaluation Sub-Committee (hereinafter referred to as the Sub-Committee). The requirements for authorship and recognition of scientific research achievements are as follows:

I. Authorship Requirements for Scientific Research Achievements

1.Scientific research achievements must be obtained by the degree applicant with “Southeast University” or “a specific institution of Southeast University” as the first affiliation.

2.The first affiliation of both the first author and the first corresponding author of academic papers must be “Southeast University” or “a specific institution of Southeast University.” Unless specially noted in the Sub-Committee’s achievement assessment standards, the degree applicant must be the first author of the academic paper. (For academic papers with co-first authors, only the author ranked first may apply for the degree using that paper). If authorship is sorted alphabetically, proof that the degree applicant is the primary contributor (equivalent to the first author) must be provided and recognized by the School Academic Committee.

3.Patents refer to national invention patents and PCT patents. For full-time graduate students applying for a degree, Southeast University must be the first patentee, and the degree applicant must be the first inventor, or the supervisor (co-supervisor) must be the first inventor and the degree applicant the second inventor. For part-time graduate students applying for a degree, Southeast University must be a co-patentee, and the degree applicant must be the first inventor.

4.National-level S&T awards refer to the National Natural Science Award, National Technological Invention Award, and National S&T Progress Award. Provincial/ministerial-level S&T awards or social science awards refer to those awarded by provincial/autonomous region/municipal governments and the Outstanding Scientific Research Achievement Awards for Higher Education Institutions awarded by the Ministry of Education. Ranking requirements for degree applicants in awards: National-level S&T awards have no ranking limit; Provincial/ministerial-level First Prize requires ranking within the top 7; Second Prize within the top 5; Third Prize within the top 3.

5.For the China Patent Award, Southeast University must be the main completing unit, and the degree applicant must be a main completer with an individual award certificate. Ranking requirements: Gold Award within the top 7; Silver Award within the top 5.

6.Standards refer to national, local (provincial), and industry standards, excluding group standards and specifications. Southeast University must be one of the main compiling units, and the degree applicant and their supervisor (or co-supervisor) must be among the main drafters. The degree applicant’s ranking must be within the top 10 for national standards, and within the top 5 for local (provincial) and industry standards.

7.Appraisals refer to S&T achievement appraisals organized by first-level academic societies or associations, with a conclusion of “domestic leading level” or above. Southeast University must be the first completing unit, and the degree applicant must be a main completer (ranked within the top 3).

8.For monographs, the degree applicant must be ranked first, or the supervisor (co-supervisor) ranked first and the degree applicant ranked second.

9.For edited books and translated works, the degree applicant must be ranked first.

10.For teaching cases, Southeast University must be the first completing unit, and the degree applicant must be ranked first, or the supervisor (co-supervisor) ranked first and the degree applicant ranked second.

II. Recognition Requirements for Scientific Research Achievements

1.When applying for a degree, the degree applicant’s scientific research achievements must be formally published academic papers/monographs/edited books/translated works, authorized invention patents, formally awarded S&T or social science awards, standards that have passed review or completed approval filing, appraised achievements, or teaching cases selected for the IVEY/MBA/MEM case sharing database. Original copies of achievements or other proof equivalent to originals (e.g., paper retrieval certificates issued by the university library) must be provided when submitting the degree application.

2.If the journals recognized by each Sub-Committee are adjusted, the latest journal catalog stipulated by the Sub-Committee shall prevail. TheChinese Core Journals Directory,China S&T Journal Excellence Action Plan Selected Journals,Summary of Tiered Directories for High-Quality S&T Journals, JCR quartiles, CSSCI journal catalogs, and CSCD core journal catalogs shall be based on the year the academic paper was published (retrieval certificates must be provided). Supplements, special issues, and other non-standard publications of journals are not included.

3.Achievements published in journals listed in the Chinese Academy of Sciences’Early Warning List of International Journalswill not be counted as assessment achievements for degree applications. TheEarly Warning Listis based on the year the academic paper was published.

4.Academic papers published in journals indexed by SCIE/SSCI/A&HCI must be of the type Article, Review, or Letter. Academic papers published in journals indexed by EI must be of the type Journal Article. Academic papers published in journals listed in the CSSCI and CSCD catalogs must not be reviews, book reviews, news reports, interviews, award information introductions, etc.

5.Conferences refer to Main Conferences. Conference papers refer to Full Papers or Regular Papers. Other forms of papers such as Short Papers, Demo Papers, Technical Briefs, Posters, etc., will not be counted. Publishing multiple papers at the same level conference will only count as one.

6.If the same achievement receives multiple awards, is published multiple times, or exhibited multiple times, it will not be accumulated repeatedly; it will be calculated based on the highest level.

7.Academic papers formally published in Q1 or Q2 journals in the corresponding discipline fields of the JCR Quartile Table, if not yet indexed by SCIE/SSCI, will be treated as indexed, but proof of formal publication of the paper (certified by a third party) and the journal’s JCR report must be provided.

III. Recognition Methods for Special Achievements

1.For graduate students who have made significant contributions to economic and social development by achieving major theoretical innovations, frontier technological breakthroughs, major engineering designs, major product R&D, or solving major engineering technical problems, if the dissertation is of a high level, there may be no restrictive requirements for scientific research achievements when applying for a degree.

2.The process for recognizing the level of the dissertation is as follows:

A.The graduate student applies, and the supervisor recommends the application to the Sub-Committee.

B.The Sub-Committee recognizes the core innovative scientific research achievements of the dissertation (the department needs to organize peer expert evaluation; at least one peer expert must be a member of the Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, a member of the Discipline Evaluation Group of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee, or a member of the National Professional Degree Graduate Education Steering Committee).

C.The Graduate School invites five domestic and international peer experts to conduct a correspondence review of the core innovative scientific research achievements of the dissertation. If four or more experts consider it “fully meets the standards,” the correspondence review is deemed passed.

D.The Graduate School organizes a collective meeting review for the core innovative scientific research achievements of the dissertation that passed the correspondence review. The meeting review experts are mainly members of the University Academic Committee. Other experts may be invited to participate as needed. The graduate student must attend the defense in person. Experts vote anonymously. Approval requires the consent of two-thirds or more of the attending experts. Only after passing the collective meeting review can the student apply for the dissertation defense.

IV. Miscellaneous

This document shall be implemented from the date of issuance. If the scientific research achievement assessment standards of each Sub-Committee are adjusted, they must be discussed and approved by the Sub-Committee and then submitted to the University Degree Evaluation Committee for approval before implementation. If the Sub-Committee’s regulations on the authorship and recognition of scientific research achievements do not have explicit requirements or have lower requirements than this document, this document shall prevail; if they are higher than this document, the Sub-Committee’s regulations shall prevail. The Graduate School is responsible for interpreting this document.

Supplementary Provisions on the “Requirements for Authorship and Recognition of Scientific Research Achievements for Graduate Students Applying for Degrees at Southeast University”

To all colleges, departments, institutes, offices, directly affiliated units, and academic business units:

1.To further improve the quality of graduate training at our university and promote in-depth cooperation with other universities, research institutions, and industry enterprises, the following supplementary provisions regarding the authorship requirements for scientific research achievements when applying for degrees have been discussed and approved at the 10th meeting of the 16th University Degree Evaluation Committee. These apply to graduate students guided by special types of supervisors such as part-time supervisors, as well as those participating in the special reform program for engineering master’s and doctoral training:

2.The graduate student must be the first author of the academic paper, and the first affiliation must be Southeast University. Southeast University must be one of the corresponding author affiliations of the academic paper.

3.For other scientific research achievements obtained during the study period, such as S&T awards, national standards, and patents, the graduate student’s first affiliation must be Southeast University, and Southeast University must be one of the completing units of the achievement.

Except for the above supplementary provisions, all other requirements shall be implemented in accordance with theRequirements for Authorship and Recognition of Scientific Research Achievements for Graduate Students Applying for Degrees at Southeast University(Document No. [2022] No. 168).
