Introduction to the Department of Infectious Diseases

The Department of Infectious Diseases is jointly established by the Second Hospital of Nanjing and the Teaching and Research Office of Infectious Diseases.

The Second Hospital of Nanjing, founded in 1933, is a Grade 3A tertiary hospital that integrates medical care, education, scientific research, and preventive services. It is distinguished by its focus on "specialized excellence, comprehensive strength, emphasis on prevention and treatment, and rapid response to public health emergencies." The hospital is a key construction unit of Jiangsu Province's High-Level Hospital Initiative and one of the first regional medical centers in the province. It is also a national pilot unit for medical-prevention integration and collaboration. Professor Yang is a Chief Physician (Level 2), Professor, and Doctoral Supervisor. He serves as the Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and President of the Second Hospital of Nanjing, and is a member of the Jiangsu Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and a Nanjing Model Worker. He is the academic leader of the National Key Specialty in Infectious Diseases and the Respiratory Infectious Diseases program. He has been honored as a Jiangsu Provincial Key Medical Talent, a Jiangsu Top-Notch Health Professional, a Young and Middle-Aged Expert with Outstanding Contributions to Jiangsu Province, and a recipient of the 10th Chinese Physician Award.Professor Yang holds key positions in several academic societies, including:Member, Chinese Society of Hepatology Member, Chinese Society of Infectious Diseases Chair, Liver Disease Branch, Jiangsu Association of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Vice Chair, Hepatology Branch, Jiangsu Medical Association. His clinical expertise lies in the diagnosis of liver diseases using clinical, pathological, and imaging approaches, with a particular focus on complex, rare, and severe liver diseases. He has led 1 National Natural Science Foundation project and 9 provincial and municipal research grants, including a clinical medicine special project from the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Science and Technology. He has published 20 SCI papers and 22 papers in the Chinese Medical Journal as first or corresponding author, and has translated one monograph. He has received 10 research awards, including the Jiangsu Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award (First Prize), the Jiangsu Provincial Medical New Technology Introduction Award (First Prize), and the Nanjing Science and Technology Progress Award (Third Prize). He serves on the editorial boards of several prestigious journals, including theChinese Journal of Infectious Diseases,Chinese Journal of Hepatology, andJournal of Clinical Hepatology. He is widely recognized in the field of infectious diseases both domestically and internationally.

Dr. Zhang Qun is the Director of the Department of Infectious Diseases at Zhongda Hospital, Southeast University, and Executive Director of the National Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Flagship Hepatology Center. She holds an M.D., is a Deputy Chief Physician, and a Master's Supervisor. She has been selected for the Jiangsu "Six Talent Peaks" Program. Her academic roles include:Member, Infection Branch, China Association of Chinese Medicine, ember, Hepatology (Integrated TCM-WM) Branch, Chinese Research Hospital Association, Standing Member, Infectious Diseases Branch, Jiangsu Medical Association, Member, Hepatology Branch, Jiangsu Medical Association, Member, Infectious Diseases Branch, Jiangsu Association of Physicians, Standing Member and Secretary-General, Chronic Disease Health Management Branch, Jiangsu Research Hospital Association. Dr. Zhang has published over 40 SCI and Chinese core journal papers as first or corresponding author, including in theJournal of Hepatology, and has received 4 provincial and ministerial awards.

The Department of Infectious Diseases offers theoretical and clinical clerkship courses in infectious diseases annually for students in Clinical Medicine (5-year, 5+3 integrated, and 5+3+X innovative programs), Medical Laboratory Science, Preventive Medicine, and international students. The department currently has 1 doctoral supervisor and 1 master's supervisor at Southeast University, and has independently trained 60 master's graduates and 10 doctoral graduates in infectious diseases, contributing a significant number of highly qualified professionals to the province and beyond. To further promote academic development and international exchange, Professor Yang Yongfeng regularly invites renowned scholars and experts from around the world for academic visits and collaborations.

The Department of Infectious Diseases places great emphasis on both basic and clinical research. Over the years, it has undertaken numerous research projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and various provincial and municipal agencies. In the past five years, the department has achieved: 15 research awards, including: 3 Jiangsu Provincial Science and Technology Awards, 6 Jiangsu Provincial Medical New Technology Introduction Awards, 1 Jiangsu Traditional Chinese Medicine Science and Technology Award, 1 Jiangsu Medical Science and Technology Award, 93 monographs, 362 patents, 32 software copyrights. Over 500 SCI papers(highest impact factor: 38.1), including 60 papers in CAS Zone 1 journals and 48 papers in the Chinese Medical Journal series. The department has also participated in sub-projects of major national science and technology initiatives in collaboration with Beijing Friendship Hospital, Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center, Zhejiang University, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, and Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital. In 2005, the hospital successfully passed the national GCP (Good Clinical Practice) site inspection by the National Medical Products Administration, and in 2009, it was officially certified as a National Drug Clinical Trial Institution, with approved specialties in Hepatology and Infectious Diseases.
