The Department of Medical Imaging of Southeast University was established in 1990 and is one of the earliest departments of medical imaging in China. The department began to admit master's students in 1994 and obtained the "Doctoral Program in Medical Imaging and Nuclear Medicine" in 2003, which was the first of its kind in Jiangsu Province. After several decades of development, the medical imaging major of the department ranks first at level A+ (in 2025 Soft Science), and has twice won the National Teaching Achievement Award for Medical Imaging (the only one in the country). It is a continuous national-level characteristic professional construction point and a provincial brand professional. It has been approved: National Medical Research and Industry Integration Innovation Platform, National Key Clinical Specialty, National Key Laboratory of Digital Medical Engineering, the first national first-class undergraduate professional construction point, the discipline innovation introduction base for major diseases intelligent diagnosis, the Innovation Center for Basic Research in Imaging Intervention Medicine of the Ministry of Education, National Key Laboratory of Intelligent Imaging and Intervention Medicine (under cultivation), National Comprehensive Intervention Quality Control Center, Jiangsu Medical Innovation Center, and covers various imaging intervention fields such as neurology, cardiology, vascular diseases, and tumors. National training bases.


The department's research focuses mainly on imaging diagnostics, interventional radiology, molecular imaging, ultrasound medicine, nuclear medicine, medical image processing and artificial intelligence. It has hosted more than 20 projects including the National Key Research and Development Program, National Science and Technology Major Projects, National Natural Science Foundation of China Key Projects, and major scientific research instrument development projects. It has published over 500 papers in international important journals such as LANCET and NATURE, and has obtained more than 40 domestic and foreign invention patents. It has led or participated in the formulation of more than 30 international and domestic guidelines, and has won the National Science and Technology Progress Award three times.


The department's team is led by Academician Teng Gaojun, and consists of a core team of national young top experts, chair professors, national 10000 Talents Program innovation leaders, Torch Program recipients of the State Council, young chair professors, overseas young top experts, and a number of provincial and ministerial-level talents. It forms a strong and vigorous research team capable of shouldering important responsibilities. It has successively obtained important talent projects including key talent projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology, six major talent peaks innovation teams, etc., and won the "Top Ten Graduate Mentor Teams" of Jiangsu Province and the "Excellent Teaching Team" of Jiangsu Universities' "Blue Sky Project".


In terms of international cooperation, team members have been elected as fellows of the American Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) and the European Society of Interventional Radiology (CIRSE); former president of the Asia-Pacific Cardiovascular Interventional Radiology Society (APSCVIR), founder of the International Society of Tumor Intervention Multidisciplinary Sciences (ISMIO), and a founding chairperson. They serve as deputy editors of the official journals of the two major interventional societies, CVIR and JVIR, and are international advisors of "The Lancet Gastroenterology and Hepatology". They have been selected as high-quality new journals of China Science Journal Excellence Action Plan and included in the high-quality new journal list of China Science Journal Excellence Action Plan. They have been included in Scopus, DOAJ, etc. international databases. "EngMedicine" has been selected as a high-quality new journal of China Science Core Journals and the high-quality new journal list of China Science Journal Excellence Action Plan, and has been included in ESCI, Scopus, etc. databases. As the chairperson, they have held the conferences of APCCVIR 2016, SGI 2018, APSCVIR 2026 and ISMIO 2024-2026, and organized the Belt and Road study courses, promoting advanced imaging intervention diagnosis and treatment technologies from China to the world. Due to international academic influence and outstanding contributions to the international interventional industry, they have received the highest honors from three major international mainstream societies.
