Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology – Introduction

The history of our discipline can be traced back to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the former National Central University School of Medicine. Following subsequent transitions through Nanjing Railway Medical College and Southeast University, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology was formally established in 2010, building upon the former teaching and research section. The program was authorized by the State Council of the People's Republic of China to confer master's degrees in obstetrics and gynecology in 1985. Currently, it offers doctoral training under the first‑level discipline of Clinical Medicine at Southeast University School of Medicine, and began admitting postdoctoral fellows in 2023. As an integral component of medical education at Southeast University, the department adheres to a philosophy of close integration between clinical practice and scientific research, and has achieved substantial accomplishments in teaching, patient care, and research.

Faculty Leadership

Professor Shen Yang, Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, has over 20 years of experience in both teaching and clinical practice. He is a doctoral and master's supervisor, a leading investigator of the National Key Clinical Specialty (Gynecology), director of the Nanjing Municipal Key Laboratory of Smart Obstetrics and Gynecology, and a second‑tier talent of Jiangsu Province's "333 High‑Level Talent Training Project." His teaching contributions include serving as an editorial board member of the national "13th Five‑Year Plan" English textbook *Obstetrics and Gynecology*, associate editor of *Obstetrics and Gynecology Study Guide*, and editor‑in‑chief of *Sexual and Reproductive Health*. He also holds positions as standing editorial board member of the *Journal of Southeast University* and *Modern Medicine Journal*, and as an invited reviewer for the *Journal of Oncology*. His educational initiatives include the 2023 Jiangsu Provincial Postgraduate Course in Ideological and Political Education, "Advances in Obstetrics and Gynecology"; the 2020 Southeast University curriculum reform project "Enhancing Clinical Faculty Competence through Integrated Medical Ethics Education"; and the "Second‑Batch University‑Level Blended First‑Class Undergraduate Course." He has published numerous Chinese and English educational research papers and edited multiple teaching monographs. In 2021, he received the Second Prize of the Southeast University Teaching Achievement Award, and in 2023, he guided students to a Third Prize in the "China Graduate Robotics Innovation Design Competition." His research honors include a Second Prize of the National Maternal and Child Health Science and Technology Award, an Innovation Award from the China Association of Inventions, a Second Prize of the Jiangsu Provincial Health Commission Medical Technology Introduction Award, two First Prizes and one Second Prize of the Provincial Maternal and Child New Technology Introduction Awards, and a Third Prize of the Provincial Preventive Medicine Science and Technology Award.

Faculty Profile

The department currently employs over 40 full‑time teaching staff, with a well‑structured and balanced faculty team. This includes 21 senior professionals, 22 intermediate-level professionals, 4 doctoral supervisors, and 8 master's supervisors (including adjunct appointments). All faculty members hold master's or doctoral degrees. They have contributed to more than 20 monograph volumes.

Academic Programs

The department offers undergraduate courses in Obstetrics and Gynecology(delivered in three tracks: Chinese‑medium, bilingual, and full English), and postgraduate courses includingAdvances in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Gynecologic Oncology, Perinatal Medicine, and Essentials of Obstetrics and Gynecology, as well as a general education course on Reproductive Health. Each year, we deliver approximately 800 class hours of instruction across graduate, undergraduate, and elective levels, and provide clinical training for an average of 80 interns and visiting physicians annually. To date, we have trained over 100 master's graduates and more than 20 doctoral graduates. Since 1996, we have hosted clinical clerkships for German medical students, and since 2009, we have admitted international postgraduate students.

Clinical and Training Centers

The department is home to the National Key Clinical Specialty (Gynecology), a provincial‑level training base for the "Basic Surgical Skills Enhancement Project" (Obstetrics), the Jiangsu Provincial Maternal Critical Care Treatment Guidance Center, the Jiangsu Provincial Maternal Critical Care Quality Control Center, and a Hysteroscopy Training Base. Each year, we train hundreds of primary‑care physicians. As a national clinical trial site for drugs and medical devices, we have undertaken more than a dozen international multicenter clinical trials and national clinical studies.

Research and Scholarly Activities

The department places a strong emphasis on academic exchange and maintains productive collaborative relationships with both domestic and international leaders in obstetrics and gynecology, ensuring that our academic and technical standards remain aligned with advanced global practices. We have been awarded and participated in nearly 50 research projects funded by national, ministerial, provincial, and institutional sources. Our achievements include national scientific and technological awards and provincial‑ministerial level science and technology progress awards. In the past three years, nearly 100 papers have been published in peer‑reviewed medical journals, including over 30 indexed in SCI. We regularly host national‑level continuing education programs, such as the "Provincial Maternal Critical Care Capability Enhancement Training Course," as well as high‑profile conferences including the "Jinling Summit Forum on Minimally Invasive and AI‑Assisted Gynecology," the annual meeting of the Gynecologic AI and Minimally Invasive Diagnosis & Treatment Committee of the Jiangsu Research‑Type Hospital Society, the "Zijin Forum on Gynecologic Oncology," the "International Seminar on Gynecologic Oncology and Precision Medicine Advances," and the "Multidisciplinary Management Symposium for Endocrine Disorders in Gynecology."
