The Department of Internal Medicine, School of Medicine, Southeast University traces its origin to the Internal Medicine Division of the former Central University School of Medicine, boasting a history spanning over 76 years. Throughout decades of development, the department has fostered and collaborated with numerous prestigious scholars and clinical experts both at home and abroad, including Qi Shounan, Mou Shanchu, Wang Shiwen, Yan Lincun, Chen Daguang, Peng Changqing, Ji Shouqi, You Dayu, Yin Dongpeng and other distinguished academics.

The department currently encompasses eight specialized subspecialties. Among them, Cardiovascular Medicine and Nephrology are designated National Key Clinical Specialties; Nephrology, Endocrinology and Hematology are recognized as Jiangsu Provincial Key Medical Disciplines; while Cardiovascular Medicine, Nephrology, Endocrinology, Hematology, Gastroenterology, Respiratory Medicine and Geriatrics are rated Jiangsu Provincial Key Clinical Specialties. As a Level 2 authorized discipline, it offers comprehensive doctoral, master’s and postdoctoral research programs. The department hosts multiple high-end fundamental and clinical research platforms, including the Jiangsu Provincial Innovative Nephrology Center, the Jiangsu Provincial Key Laboratory of Kidney Injury and Repair, the National Chest Pain Center, and the National Drug Clinical Trial Base.

Our faculty consists of 38 full professors, 68 associate professors, 27 doctoral supervisors and 6 master’s supervisors. The department has assembled an outstanding academic workforce, whose members have been honored with prestigious national titles including National Outstanding Physician, National Outstanding Young Physician, National Outstanding Young Scientist, Changjiang Scholars, and Jiangsu Provincial Medical Leading Talents. A great number of principal investigators and core faculty members hold prominent leadership roles in national academic societies, such as Vice Chairperson positions in national first-tier medical associations, standing committee seats, and chair/deputy chair posts of provincial academic organizations.

The department undertakes undergraduate, postgraduate medical education and clinical residency training, covering the 5-year clinical medicine program, the integrated “5+3” MD program, the “5+3+X” elite clinical medicine track, as well as students majoring in Medical Imaging and Medical Laboratory Science, alongside doctoral and master degree candidates. Its signature educational paradigms, including Internal Medicine Grand Rounds and multidisciplinary team (MDT) consultations for complex refractory diseases, together with practice-oriented integrated curricula, effectively cultivate students’ clinical reasoning and diagnostic decision-making capabilities. The discipline launched master’s degree admissions as early as 1936, resumed postgraduate enrollment in 1981, established the 7-year integrated bachelor-master clinical medicine program in 2002, and gained independent doctoral degree authorization in 2003. Today, it enrolls both professional and academic postgraduate and doctoral candidates, dedicated to cultivating future medical professionals with global vision, professional dedication, rigorous ethical standards and exemplary professional integrity. A large cohort of our graduates have won national talent honors and grown into leading figures across the internal medicine field nationwide.

In recent years, the department has formed distinctive dominant research directions, including renal fibrosis, atherosclerosis, cardiovascular imaging, as well as basic and clinical research on chronic diabetic complications. Our research endeavors are funded by major national grants, including the National Key Research and Development Program, national science and technology major projects, the National “Four Major Chronic Diseases” 2030 Initiative, international cooperative programs of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and National Outstanding Young Scientist Funds. Our academic achievements have earned numerous provincial and national awards, including the Second Class Prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, and Ministry of Education Natural Science Awards.
