Department of Pathophysiology

The Department of Pathophysiology is a doctoral and master's degreeauthorization point for "Pathology and Pathophysiology" (affiliated with the first-level discipline authorization point of basic medicine). It is a council member of the Chinese Society of Pathophysiology, and an executive director and vice chairman unit of the Jiangsu Provincial Society of Pathophysiology. Currently, the department has 3 faculty members, including 1 researcher, 1 senior engineer, and 1 lecturer, all holding doctoral degrees. Most of the teachers graduated from undergraduate clinical medicine programs, and all senior-title teachers have over one year of overseas study and research experience, and are both doctoral and master's supervisors.

Since the establishment of the Medical College (originally the Medical College of the National Central University, established in 1935), the current Department of Pathophysiology (as of March 2021) has gone through various stages, including the Pathophysiology Teaching Group within the Pathology Teaching and Research Office (November 1957), the Pathology Teaching and Research Office (September 1978), and the Department of Pathology and Pathophysiology (April 2000). Professors Yu Jiacheng, Huang Yemei, Wei Kaibin, Wang Jiping, Yu Weiping, and Wang Lihong, who have served as successive heads, have made significant contributions and efforts in undertaking related teaching and research tasks.

Currently, our department undertakes the teaching tasks for graduate students in the Medical College, the Top-notch Innovative Medical Talent Program, the 5+3 integrated program, the 5-year undergraduate program (including international students), and the nursing undergraduate program at Chengxian College. The main courses taught include "Pathophysiology" (in both Chinese and English) and "Functional Experimental Science" (in both Chinese and English) for undergraduates, and "Advanced Pathophysiology" for graduate students. In addition, we participate in teaching reform courses such as "Comprehensive Seminar on Basic Medicine". Our instructors focus on teaching quality and ideological and political education, and are well-received by medical students. Our departmental teachers have edited or co-edited multiple textbooks and teaching reference books, including "Pathophysiology", "Functional Experimental Science", "Introduction to Clinical Medicine", and "Guidance for Learning Pathophysiology". They have won several teaching achievement awards and published multiple teaching papers. In recent years, our department has continuously promoted teaching reform and innovation, emphasizing the integration of teaching and practice. Our young teachers have achieved good results in the National Functional Experimental Skills Competition multiple times; they have guided undergraduates to complete several national-level college student innovation training programs, achieving fruitful results.

Our department has long been engaged in scientific research on the pathogenesis and targeted intervention of major diseases such as tumors, infections, and sepsis. We have undertaken and completed multiple general and youth fund projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. We have long-term scientific research cooperation projects with the University of Liverpool in the UK and jointly cultivate doctoral students. We have published dozens of academic papers in international academic journals (including high-impact factor journals). We have trained dozens of doctoral and master's degree graduates, one of whom received an excellent doctoral thesis award from Southeast University. Almost all of our graduate students work in universities and tertiary hospitals, and some have become well-known scholars in the field of pathophysiology in China.
